Beat the summer heat with a swimming pool

Ready to beat the summer heat with a new swimming pool? Here are some things to consider.

After some time, using the community pool or driving to the beach every time you need to cool off on a hot summer’s day just doesn’t cut it anymore. If you’ve officially had enough of sharing with strangers and want to enjoy a cooling swim at the comfort of your own home, make sure to take the following tips into consideration.

Size

Before you even consult with a pool builder, it’s important to start by measuring the spot where you want the pool to be situated. Then, take these measurements to your pool builder so you can get an accurate quotation.

While you’re at it, measure the slope of your yard where you want your pool to be. This will also affect the design of the pool and determine whether it will be an in-ground, above-ground or an in-between pool.

Types

As you may know, there are different types of swimming pools out there. From concrete to fibreglass, gunite and even vinyl lined. The best way to choose from these options is to figure out what the purpose of your pool will be, so that you can end up with something that’s perfectly functional and congruent with your needs.

For example, fibreglass swimming pools are generally easier to install and take care of, and they can stay warmer for longer as well. On the other hand, concrete swimming pools take much longer to install.

Style

These days, homeowners are spoilt for choice when it comes to the different pool styles and designs that are available.

However, the most important thing to keep in mind when you’re choosing a pool style is whether or not it will fit in with the overall design of your backyard. At the end of the day, you don’t want your pool to seem out of place, but rather fit in seamlessly with your backyard garden of whatever type of outdoor setup you have going on.

Find out what the rules and regulations are

One of the most important steps to take before you even consult with a pool builder is to call up your local council and ask them what the rules and regulations are around building a swimming pool. Chances are, there are certain safety regulations and construction standards that you’ll be required to comply with to make sure that your pool stands the test of time.

Questions to ask the builder

Before you hire a pool builder, be sure to check the following:

–          Insurance: Check with your local council again to find out if the responsibility of taking out insurance is yours or the builder’s. Either way, make sure that the job is insured so that if any structural malfunction happens to the pool a few years down the line, you won’t have to pay out of pocket for the repairs.

–          Warranty: Be sure to choose a pool builder that offers a warranty for their work.

–          Detailed quotation: Study the quotation that you get from your builder and make sure that it’s as comprehensive as possible. This means that it should contain all the little details of what goes into building the pool. The last thing you want is to get surprise extra costs at the end of the job that you hadn’t budgeted for because they weren’t included in the initial quotation.

–          Track record: Do a check on your builder to make sure that they are who they say they are. One way to go about this is to look at the testimonials on their website, or ask people who’ve worked with them in the past.  At the end of the day, you’ll be investing a lot of money into this person’s services so you want to make sure that they have a good reputation.

–          Credentials: Find out if there is a pool builder’s association (SPASA) in your area and nationally that your builder should be a part of, and then search for their company name there. If they are indeed part of a reputable association, you can rest assured they are a reliable and respectable company.

Who will be using the pool?

There’s a huge difference between a pool that’s built for a family, one that’s built for entertaining, and one that’s built for a couple with no kids. Each of these requires a different design to make sure that it caters to the user’s needs.

As you can see, there are quite a few considerations to make when building a swimming pool, including the design, your budget, the materials and the builder you choose to hire. Once you’ve ticked all these boxes and can confidently say that you know what you want, then you’ll be well on your way to building the swimming pool of your dreams!
